Abstrak
Phycocyanin is a pigment belonging to the phycobiliprotein group in bluegreen algae such as Spirulina sp.. These pigments have biological activitiesincluding anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and etc, which can be applied to thefields of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical. Phycocyanin canprevent the formation and stabilization of ROS which can cause damage to cellcomponents including DNA, lipids, proteins, and also cell membranes. Theapplication of phycocyanin had several obstacles, including low bioavailability,difficulty to penetrate the skin in topical applications, and low internalization ofphycocyanin in cells. This is related to the nature of phycocyanin, namely its lowstability, and negatively charged properties. Phycocyanin encapsulation usingnanotechnology can be an alternative solution to optimize its functionality
